“The Gift”, second track off of 1967’s White Light/White Heat, was the dark and humorous short-story written by Lou Reed for a college assignment years earlier. John Cale sings/narrates the story of lovesick Waldo Jeffers, who out of desperation, devises a surprise plan to see his sweetheart residing states apart. Equipped with “a few air holes, some water, and of course, midnight snacks”, Waldo mails himself via U.S. Mail from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin.
